The rise of the Buzz! Buzzers

Buzz! - Wikipedia

The PlayStation 2 Buzz! Buzzers, developed by Magenta Software and published by Sony, were vibrant, wireless controllers introduced in 2005 to enhance party and trivia gaming on the console.

The four controllers, each featuring a large red buzzer with 4 smaller buttons—red, green, blue, and yellow—were created for the Buzz! mini-game series, offering fast-paced challenges that tested players’ reflexes and knowledge in different ways. These Buzzers quickly became iconic and a source of fun gaming on the PS2, compatible with many other party-type titles that came later.

Soon the next generation of Buzz! Buzzers came along for the PlayStation 3, and they were wireless. This new model not only expanded the experience with its new features and improved design, it also maintained the colourful, intuitive style whilst offering better connectivity, therefore ensuring that the Buzz! experience continued to thrive.

The PS3 model had responsive buttons, a dongle, and a wireless design which made multiplayer sessions lively and simple to set up, promoting social interaction.

Note: A second dongle is required for additional buzzers (for 8-player games).

Overall, the Buzz! Buzzers revolutionised multiplayer gaming on the PlayStation platform, making sessions more engaging, interactive, and memorable, and they remain a notable example of innovative hardware that brought people together through play.
